Our assessment criteria
Every firm in our guides is assessed against the same set of criteria. No single factor determines a ranking; positions reflect our editorial judgement of the overall picture across all of the following:
- Specialism and depth of experience — whether family law is a dedicated focus or one practice area among many, and the seniority and track record of the family team.
- Professional accreditations — in particular Law Society of Scotland Accredited Specialist status in Family Law or Child Law, accredited mediator status, collaborative law training, and FLAGS arbitration qualification.
- Independent directory recognition — rankings in Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500, which are themselves based on extensive independent research and peer review.
- Breadth of services — coverage across divorce, financial provision, child law, cohabitation, agreements, and protective orders.
- Dispute resolution options — availability of mediation, collaborative law, and arbitration alongside court representation.
- Fee transparency — published fixed fees, clear billing practices, free or fixed-fee initial consultations, and Legal Aid availability.
- Client reputation — publicly available client reviews and testimonials, weighed for volume, recency, and consistency.
- Accessibility — office locations, geographic coverage, and remote consultation options.
- Awards and industry recognition — relevant, verifiable awards from credible bodies.
Our sources
Profiles are built exclusively from publicly available information, including:
- Each firm’s official website;
- Law Society of Scotland and Law Society of England & Wales records, including accreditation registers;
- Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 directory entries;
- Other reputable public sources, such as recognised legal directories and published award listings.
We do not publish unverifiable claims. Where a detail could not be confirmed at the time of research, our comparison tables mark it as unconfirmed rather than guessing.
How rankings are decided
Rankings are determined editorially by weighing the criteria above. We do not use a mechanical points formula, because family law practices differ in ways that resist crude scoring — a single-solicitor boutique with exceptional accreditations and a national full-service firm with a large accredited team can both serve clients outstandingly well in different circumstances. Our profiles explain the reasoning behind each firm’s position so you can apply your own priorities.
What we never do
- No firm can pay to be included, excluded, promoted, or demoted.
- We accept no advertising, sponsorship, referral fees, or commissions from listed firms.
- Firms are not notified or consulted about their ranking position before publication.
Updates and corrections
The legal market changes: firms merge, solicitors move, accreditations are gained. We review our guides periodically and date-stamp each one. If you believe any information is inaccurate or out of date, please contact us — corrections supported by verifiable evidence are made promptly.
