About Lochgilphead Sheriff Court
Lochgilphead Sheriff Court is unlike any other court on this site: a single courtroom within the Police Buildings on Lochnell Street, with no public counter, sitting as a sheriff court on the fourth Tuesday of each month (and as a Justice of the Peace Court on the first). Its entire administration — enquiries, paperwork, listings — runs through Dunoon Sheriff Court, forty-odd miles away over the hills.
It exists because Mid Argyll needs it. Lochgilphead, at the head of Loch Gilp where Loch Fyne meets the Crinan Canal, is the administrative capital of the whole vast Argyll and Bute council area — and its communities would otherwise face long journeys to Dunoon, Oban, or Campbeltown for even routine court business. The monthly sitting is the modern descendant of Scotland’s oldest judicial habit: the court that travels to the people.
