About Fort William Sheriff Court

Fort William Sheriff Court serves Lochaber — the town at the foot of Ben Nevis and the great sweep of the west Highlands around it, from Glencoe to the Small Isles ferry ports. Family cases from this dispersed district are heard locally on the High Street rather than requiring the road to Inverness.

The courthouse is a Gothic Revival building of 1876 near the north end of the pedestrianised High Street, Category C listed, still ringed by its original boundary wall, railings, and gatepiers — a compact Victorian court in a town whose setting does the grandeur for it.

History

The Story of the Court

Sheriff court hearings have taken place in Fort William since 1794 — the town’s garrison origins gave way, within a generation of the last Jacobite rising’s embers cooling, to the ordinary machinery of civil justice, run for decades from whatever accommodation the town could offer.

The dedicated courthouse came with the great Victorian court-building wave. Completed in 1876, it was designed by James Matthews and William Lawrie — the Aberdeen-and-Inverness partnership that, more than any other firm, gave the Highlands their courts: Kingussie in 1864, Lochmaddy in 1875, Fort William in 1876, Portree by 1877. Their Gothic Revival design for Lochaber has held the same High Street corner ever since.

The court survived the twenty-first century’s consolidations that closed smaller Highland courts, and continues as Lochaber’s own — the Justice of the Peace Court sharing the building, and the West Highland Line delivering parties and practitioners almost to its door.

Family Cases at Fort William Sheriff Court

Lochaber’s family cases — divorce, children’s cases, financial provision, protective orders — are heard here under the standard framework in our family hearings guide. For outlying communities, from Kinlochleven to Mallaig, ask your solicitor early what the court will take remotely — distance-aware case management is standard practice in the west Highlands.

Our detailed solicitor guides don’t yet cover Lochaber; the nearest full guide is Inverness, and the directory includes firms serving west Highland clients remotely by video.

Visiting the court: The court is on the High Street in the centre of Fort William; the railway station — terminus of the West Highland Line from Glasgow and the sleeper from London — is around ten minutes’ walk. Hearing times and contacts are at scotcourts.gov.uk.
Court Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which areas does Fort William Sheriff Court serve?

Lochaber — Fort William and the west Highland district around it. Skye’s cases go to Portree, the central Highlands to Inverness, and Argyll’s coast southward to the North Strathclyde courts; our court map shows every boundary.

How long has Fort William had a court?

Hearings since 1794 — remarkable for a town founded as a garrison — though the purpose-built courthouse came in 1876, from Matthews & Lawrie, the partnership that courthoused half the Highlands in the 1860s and 70s.

Do I have to attend in person for my divorce?

Usually not — undefended divorces proceed on paperwork. Disputed children’s cases bring child welfare hearings requiring both parents’ personal attendance; our hearings guide explains the format, and remote options are worth discussing given west Highland distances.

Can I get to a hearing by train?

Often, yes — unusually for the Highlands, the West Highland Line delivers you within a ten-minute walk of the court, with services from Glasgow and the Caledonian Sleeper from London. Check timings against your hearing carefully; the line is scenic rather than fast.

How do I find a family solicitor for a Lochaber case?

Local practitioners appear here regularly, and Inverness and Glasgow firms act across the west Highlands — our Inverness guide is the nearest in-depth ranking, and the directory filters for Legal Aid and video consultation.

How do I check hearing times or contact the court?

Rolls, hours, and contacts are published at scotcourts.gov.uk; for your own case, start with your solicitor.
